Winner of the Austrian Dancehall Queen Contest in 2014, Janet Phoenix is a professional dancer and choreographer on the rise. Janet’s first experience in dancing started in front of music videos where she watched and closely repeated the dance steps. Indeed with a Nigerian father, she discovered whining and booty shaking at Nigerian parties. Before finding a taste for dancehall music, she had taken dance classes in various other dance styles such as ballet, step dance, Irish dance and Hip Hop. She performed at several shows like “Nutcracker” as well as dance competitions where she won 10 trophies and 20 medals. In her early teenage year, her taste of music shifted towards “black music”, including R’n’B and Hiphop. From that point on she practiced, freestyled and trained on her own. Among the artists that inspired her dance style were Sean Paul, Beyoncé, Ciara and Shakira. Her aspiration and motivation for dancehall dancing emerged from watching dancehall videos on Youtube at age 16. By the age of 18, Janet decided to take her love for dancing to a new level. She visited dancehall workshops and Hip-hop classes at various places. In 2014, she took part in the Austrian Dancehall Queen Contest which she won. From that moment on, doors opened and she was offered to teach at Big Smile dance school. Since then, she has been offering her weekly dancehall classes. Janet’s ambition and achievements did not stop there. In 2015 she was part of several commercials such as dancing and promoting Vienna’s biggest festival Donauinselfest and modelling for a cinema advertising called “Chemie ist in”. Her achievements include starring in video shoots and dance stages with various artists such as I-Octane, Gully Bop, Tommy Lee, Million Stylez and Nazar (one of Vienna’s most well-known rappers). Recently, she danced at Juicy, Austria’s biggest Hiphop & R’n’b party. In the upcoming months, her talent is in high demand as she will be part of other projects in Europe. She has been invited for shows in Germany, Switzerland and Croatia. Not only that, she was part of the judge panel for the Hungarian Dancehall Queen Contest 2016. She also carried out a show and a workshop in Germany and responded to an Interview with the Austrian Magazine “Biber”. Janet loves to teach and her vision is to promote confidence and growth through dance. Her vision is reflected in her “Bootcamp” classes dedicated to women, where she wants them to develop confidence and own their sexuality. Ultimately, she wants women to express themselves freely without fear. Her stage name “Phoenix” also represents this vision as well as her personality as she managed to rise like a phoenix through dance, at her most difficult times.
